Active Living: How to Get Started

Becoming active is a lifestyle change.

While it can be quite an adjustment, it is important to not get overwhelmed. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even if you make some minor adjustments at first – such as taking the stairs or parking further away – you are moving in a positive direction. Take it one step at a time (pun intended!). Continue reading this blog to learn the importance of walking for your health.

Why Walking is Important

The American Heart Association recommends that adults walk 10,000 steps per day. However, according to Business Insider, the average American walks about half of this.

Regular walking has been proven to do the following:

  • Lower cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Increase energy
  • Increase bone strength
  • Prevent weight gain

Regular walking also reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other serious diseases.

How to Get Started

It is important to remember to start off slow and steadily challenge yourself more each day. Here are some tips on walking:

  • Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes and supportive shoes.
  • Start off at a steadier pace for a short distance. It’s ok to start off with a 10 minute walk; just make sure you continually increase this each week.
  • Track your progress. It may be a good idea to invest in a step tracker.
  • Stretch it out. Remember to warm up by stretching and starting at a slower pace for the first minute or so.
  • Remember to breathe and stay hydrated!

Once you start getting more accustomed to walking, you can challenge yourself in different ways. This includes walking a bit faster or walking uphill.

As with any form of activity, stop and visit a doctor immediately if you are experiencing pain or discomfort.
